Buyers in Europe often have to answer one question before they can sign: where will our files and our data be stored and processed? English-language vendor roundups rarely help, because they list mostly US products, and a vendor's headquarters does not tell you where its servers are.
This article lists the DAM vendors based in Europe by country, shows what hosting information vendors publish, and gives you the questions to ask before you choose. Use it to build a European shortlist and to check hosting claims in a vendor's answers.
As of 2026-10-19, 217 of the 462 DAM (digital asset management) products in our dataset have headquarters in Europe. Germany has 52, the United Kingdom 38 and France 31. Where the company is based does not tell you where your data is hosted, and few vendors document where storage and AI processing take place.

Where do DAM vendors host European customers' data?#
| Product | What the vendor documents | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Freedam (publisher) | Hosted plans are hosted in Germany. Self-hosted deployments run where you put them, so you choose the country | Self-hosted DAM guide |
| Acquia DAM | For European customers, most data can be stored in and served from AWS (Amazon Web Services) data centers in Frankfurt and Ireland, set by contract. Some features can be processed or stored in the US, including Insights, auto-tagging of images, share links and embed codes, native integrations, templates, video conversions and Acquia Copilot | Acquia documentation |
| ResourceSpace | All customer data is hosted on servers in the United Kingdom, across two sites (Cambridge and London) | ResourceSpace FAQ |
When a larger vendor is the better fit: a vendor with several hosting regions, documented sub-processors and a compliance team can answer a procurement questionnaire faster than a small product. A small European vendor can be the better fit when its single hosting country matches your requirement and it answers in writing.
Does "European vendor" mean "data stays in Europe"?#
No. Company location, data-center location and processing location are three separate facts. For AI features, check where images or extracted text are sent for tagging, transcription or generation, and whether a third-party model provider receives them.
What should I ask a DAM vendor about data residency?#
- In which country and cloud provider are my originals stored? Can I choose?
- Where do backups and replicas live?
- Where do AI features process my files and extracted text? Does any third party receive them?
- Where are analytics, logs and support tooling hosted?
- Which sub-processors do you use, and in which countries?
- Which certifications cover the hosting (ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II)?
- What happens to my data on termination, and how fast is it deleted?
Procurement teams often use standard questionnaires: the SIG (128, 627 or 1,936 questions) and CAIQ v4 (261 questions).
Why does data residency matter more in Europe?#
Mordor Intelligence names tightening data-sovereignty rules as a restraint on the DAM market, especially for smaller firms and regulated sectors. Europe held an estimated USD 945.6 million, or 22.4% of global DAM revenue, in 2023, and Grand View Research expects it to grow about 12.5% a year (Grand View Research). The European Accessibility Act, effective June 2025, also pushes metadata and alt-text requirements (Mordor).
Is a self-hosted DAM an option?#
Yes. If the requirement is that files stay on servers you control, self-hosting removes the question. Open source options include ResourceSpace, Phrasea and AtroDAM, and Freedam can also be self-hosted at EUR 9,000 a year per deployment. You take on operations. See the self-hosted DAM guide.

Frequently asked questions#
217 of the 462 products in our dataset have headquarters in Europe. Germany leads with 52, then the UK with 38 and France with 31.
Outside the United States (151), Germany has 52, the United Kingdom 38, France 31, the Netherlands 19 and Canada 18.
No. GDPR compliance depends on how personal data is processed, on contracts with sub-processors and on transfer mechanisms, not only on the hosting country. Ask for the data-processing agreement and the sub-processor list.
It depends on the vendor. Acquia documents that auto-tagging of images and Acquia Copilot can be processed in the US even for European customers. Ask each vendor where AI runs and whether a third-party model provider receives your files.
With a self-hosted DAM, yes: it runs where you install it, and Freedam's hosted plans are hosted in Germany. With a hosted product, the answer depends on the vendor's regions and contract, so ask for it in writing.
