DAM vendors change owners often, and the vendor's own site rarely says so. Buyers usually find out at renewal, when the price, the account manager or the roadmap has already changed. A product can also be renamed, so a search on the name you know returns nothing useful, or shut down with a published end date.

This tracker tells you who owns the DAM you are considering, what a product used to be called, and which products no longer exist. Use it before you shortlist a vendor, and again before you renew, to know who you are really contracting with.

As of 2026-10-19, 89 of the 462 DAM (digital asset management) products in our dataset have been acquired, 17 have been rebranded and 20 have been discontinued. "Acquired" includes private equity buyouts where the product keeps its name.

What does an acquisition mean for customers?#

No independent study measures this. Two things are often reported:

  • Platform acquisitions historically bring feature freezes of 6 to 18 months, customer success restructuring and renegotiated contract terms, and the lowest-cost migration window opens when 6 to 12 months remain on a contract.
  • Acquia DAM customers have reported account-representative turnover and thinner product knowledge since roughly 2024.

An acquisition is not a reason to leave. Many acquired products keep improving under new owners, and a buyer with deeper funding can be a reason to stay.

How do you protect yourself from a change of owner?#

  1. Ask who owns the vendor and whether a sale is planned, before you sign and again at each renewal.
  2. Get a multi-year price cap in writing. Renewal increases of 20 to 23% a year have been reported for one major vendor (Vendr-derived figure, see the pricing article).
  3. Test the export now. Check that you can take your files, metadata, folder paths and rights dates out in a usable form.
  4. Consider a product you can self-host. Self-hosting keeps your files on your own servers whatever happens to the vendor. ResourceSpace is open source, and Freedam can also be self-hosted.
  5. Compare against alternatives early. Start 6 to 12 months before the contract ends; see the shortlisting article.
